Guided Tours

Feel free to visit the Vienna University Observatory within public (pre-scheduled) or special tours (upon request). 

You will see and experience:


  • The splendid neo-renaissance observatory (by the architects Fellner & Helmer)
  • The largest lens telescope in Austria, the 10.5 meter long refractor built by Howard Grubb, F.R.A.S.
  • Our collection "Maximilian Hell" with selected exhibits from three centuries of astronomical history
  • The 80 cm mirror telescope in the North Dome of the observatory

Public guided tours (with a limited number of participants) usually take place once a month. The dates for these tours can be found below. Special guided tours can be booked for groups up to 30 people upon request. The price of an individual tour amounts to 70 € (duration: approx. 90 minutes). Guided tours for children with hands-on experiments may also be arranged.

“Nights at the observatory" - public lecture series

The Department of Astrophysics offers a Friday night lecture series "Nights at the Observatory" - an extensive lecture program on various topics of astrophysics.The lectures usually take place in the second week of the month on Fridays from 18.30h. The duration of the lecture is about 60min, including discussion. The lectures aim at a general audience. The presentation languages are German and English - depending on the speaker.


After the talks we provide the opportunity to visit the largest lens telescope in Austria and/or the institute's astronomy museum.
