During the worldwide event 100 Hours of Astronomy, the Day of Astronomy took place on the Maria-Theresien-Platz in Vienna on April 4, 2009. This event was organized by both amateur astronomers and the Department of Astronomy of the University Vienna. A group of artists created spherical objects as stars and planets that could be rolled by visitors.

During the worldwide event 100 Hours of Astronomy, the Day of Astronomy took place on the Maria-Theresien-Platz in Vienna on April 4th, 2009. This event was attended by both amateur astronomers and the Department of Astronomy of the University Vienna. Some experiments were shown in the Natural History Museum. The visitors could see the convection of the surface of the sun simulated by a oil-aluminum suspension heated up by tea candles.

The Federal President as well as the Federal Minister of Science and Research Dr. Johannes Hahn and other representants of the national and international astronomical community attended this event on June 5, 2008.
