Impressions of the solar eclipse from Spain and Austria

On 12 August 2026, a very special astronomical event took place: a solar eclipse. In some parts of Europe, it was visible as a total solar eclipse, including in Greenland, Iceland and Spain. Unfortunately, people in Iceland were out of luck, as it was very cloudy there. In Spain, the solar eclipse was visible in many different places, and some of our colleagues travelled there to experience it.

Across much of Europe, the solar eclipse was visible as a partial eclipse, including in Austria. In Vienna, almost 85 per cent of the Sun’s disc was covered by the Moon.

Regardless of where we were, many of us were able to experience this special event together with friends, family and colleagues. In the pictures below, we share some special moments from this year’s solar eclipse.
