Special Colloquium by Kevin Govender

Kevin Govender, Director of the IAU Office of Astronomy for Development, from the South African Astronomical Observatory in Cape Town will visit our institute and provide a presentation on "The rise of Astronomy in Africa and using it for a better world"

19.07.23 at 15:00 in Littrow HS

This talk by Kevin Govender will cover the increasing astronomical activity on the African continent, spurred by the establishment of the African Astronomical Society and the hosting of the IAU General Assembly in 2024, for the first time on the African continent (Cape Town, 5-15 August 2024). The activities leading up to the General Assembly are driven by a vision that speaks to using the event, and astronomy in general, to make a significant impact on society. In this context the talk will also touch on the work of the IAU Office of Astronomy for Development, hosted in South Africa since 2011, and coordinating 11 regional offices globally. Since its establishment the Office has supported over 200 projects reaching over 100 countries, with funding exceeding a million Euro.
